Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum has a distinctly American backstory. It was introduced in 1955 as the “most powerful handgun in the world.” The .44 Magnum arrived at a time when there was a focus on adding muscle and power to cars, jets, and space rockets. It was a significant leap ahead of the previous record holder, the .357 Magnum, in a similarly sized, large-frame Smith & Wesson double-action revolver. The revolver, now known as the Model 29, was initially introduced simply as “the .44 Magnum,” and it was a premium product in every respect. This deluxe status followed the precedent of the “Registered Magnums” that accompanied the release of the .357 Magnum cartridge. The .44 Magnum was a remarkable achievement; it provided shooters with a sidearm that could deliver more energy than many of the popular rifles of the frontier era. The new Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum revolver was a huge success and quickly became an iconic symbol for the company. Even today, the packaging for Smith & Wesson handguns features the recognizable profile of the original .44 Magnum. Both collectors and shooters have a deep passion for the early "Pre-Model 29" .44 Magnum N-frames, which are considered special and highly sought after, often selling for double or triple the price of later models. Smith & Wesson only produced a small number of these early revolvers before making a design change, removing one of the side plate screws and creating the "four screw" version. In 1957, the company began assigning model numbers, and the .44 Magnum was designated as the Model 29.
