The Spanish Model 1916 Mauser is a compact military bolt-action rifle developed by Spain as a shortened and modernized version of the earlier Mauser Model 1893 rifle system, and it remains one of the most recognizable surplus Mauser carbines imported into the United States during the 20th century. Manufactured primarily at the Oviedo Arsenal in Spain, the Model 1916 was built using the proven small-ring Mauser action originally designed by Paul Mauser and adopted by Spain in the late 19th century. Chambered originally in 7×57mm Mauser and later converted in many cases to 7.62×51mm CETME, the rifle combined the strength, smooth feeding, and reliability of the Mauser bolt-action system with a shorter, handier carbine-length configuration intended for cavalry, engineers, artillery troops, and support units. One of the defining characteristics of the Spanish 1916 is its compact size, featuring a shortened barrel and a full-length military stock, which made the rifle lighter and easier to maneuver than standard long infantry rifles. The rifle retained classic Mauser features such as controlled-round feeding, a massive claw extractor, dual locking lugs, stripper-clip loading capability, and a straight bolt handle on most examples, while many later arsenal rebuilds added modifications such as improved sights or updated markings reflecting caliber conversions.
