The Springfield Armory XD-40 Sub-Compact is a compact, polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol designed to deliver the power and defensive capability of the .40 S&W cartridge in a highly concealable package, earning a strong reputation among concealed-carry users and defensive shooters for its reliability, durability, and user-friendly design. Imported and marketed in the United States by Springfield Armory, the XD series originated from the Croatian HS2000 pistol, produced by HS Produkt, and was rebranded and refined for the American market in the early 2000s. The XD-40 Sub-Compact became one of the most popular compact variants in the lineup, offering shooters a balance between concealability and firepower during the height of the .40 S&W service-pistol era. Chambered in .40 Smith & Wesson, the pistol was designed for concealed-carry permit holders, law-enforcement backup roles, and civilian home-defense users who wanted a compact handgun with substantial stopping power.
