Converted for specialized maritime safety, life-saving, and vessel tethering operations, Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor rifles were modified into line-throwing guns utilized by the United States Navy, Coast Guard, Revenue Cutter Service, and commercial tugboats well into the World War II era. Operating on the classic .45-70 Government blank cartridge system, these modified firearms utilized a smoothbore, shortened 12.5-inch barrel fitted with a clamp-on canister holding a spool of line attached to a brass projectile pin. Upon firing a heavy .45-70 blank cartridge, the projectile would launch the tether line across open water between ships or to shore in emergency rescue operations. Featuring a dark black finish, smooth walnut stock, and a long-range rear sight leaf, this example is housed in its original wooden transport chest stenciled "TUG LINDEN / LINE THROWING GUN" on the outer lid.

Chambered in .45-70 Govt (blanks), this set features a 12.5-inch smoothbore barrel, black finish, walnut stock, brass line-throwing projectile pins, spools of line, cleaning rods, Hoppe's supplies, blank ammunition boxes, barrel clamp mount, and its original stenciled wooden trunk. Preserved in very nice, untouched overall condition with strong steel finish coverage, smooth mechanical lock cocking, tight trapdoor breech locking, and a solid walnut stock. Offering authentic US naval and maritime rescue history, this Springfield Model 1873 Line-Throwing Gun set represents a rare collectible centerpiece.
