The U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag–Jørgensen is one of the most historically significant American military rifles, representing the United States Army’s first standard-issue repeating rifle chambered for smokeless powder ammunition. Officially adopted in 1898, the rifle was manufactured primarily at Springfield Armory and chambered in the .30 Army (.30-40 Krag) cartridge. Designed by Norwegian inventors Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jørgensen, the Model 1898 features a smooth, front-locking bolt action and the rifle’s distinctive side-loading rotary magazine, which allowed cartridges to be loaded individually without opening the bolt. Standard rifles were equipped with a 30-inch barrel, full-length walnut stock, military ladder rear sight, and a five-round magazine. The Model 1898 saw extensive service during the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, the Boxer Rebellion, and in the early years of the 20th century before being replaced by the legendary M1903 Springfield. Although eventually superseded by stronger Mauser-inspired designs, the Krag earned an outstanding reputation for its exceptionally smooth bolt operation, accuracy, and craftsmanship, making it one of the finest military bolt-action rifles of its era.
