Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Star Model SM Super is a compact, all-steel, single-action semi-automatic pistol produced by Star Bonifacio Echeverria in Eibar, Spain, as part of the postwar “Super” series of the S-line pistols. Chambered in .380 ACP (9mm Corto), it represents a scaled-down evolution of the company’s larger service pistols—most notably those in the Star Model B family—retaining a short-recoil, locked-breech system rather than the simpler blowback operation common to many pocket pistols of its size. Introduced in 1971 as a later addition to the Super lineup, the SM variant incorporated refinements such as a cam-track barrel system in place of the earlier swinging link, a captive recoil spring with a full-length guide rod, and a quick takedown lever. Distinguishing features of the SM Super include small, drift-adjustable rear sights and a tactile loaded chamber indicator, which complements the visual inspection port found on other Super Models. Like the rest of the S-series, it was designed for compact carry by military personnel, police, and aviators, combining reduced dimensions with the handling characteristics of a full-sized service pistol. Produced alongside other S-series variants rather than as a replacement, the SM Super remained part of Star’s lineup until the classic series’ discontinuation in 1983 and is today regarded as a technically refined example of mid-20th-century Spanish handgun design.
