Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The J. Stevens Crack Shot No. 26 is a classic early 20th-century American “boys’ rifle” — a small, single-shot falling-block rimfire designed for youth, training, and inexpensive recreational shooting that has become a nostalgic collectible today. Introduced in 1912–1913 as the successor to earlier Crack Shot models, the No. 26 replaced a side-lever breechblock with a more familiar underlever falling-block action, a simple and robust mechanism that made it easy for young shooters to load and fire .22 Long Rifle or .32 rimfire cartridges safely and with minimal fuss. Over its long production run — from roughly 1913 until 1939 with a brief revival in 1943 — Stevens Arms (later under Savage Arms ownership) offered the Crack Shot No. 26 with 18? to 22? round blued barrels, fixed sights, and plain straight-grip wood stocks that kept costs low yet provided a solid, utilitarian feel. The rifle was designed as a take-down firearm, meaning the barrel and forend can be easily separated from the receiver with a single screw, facilitating transport and storage—a thoughtful feature for a gun aimed at young hunters and plinkers. Chambered almost exclusively in rimfire calibers, its simple falling-block control and light overall weight made it suitable for small game and target practice, while the straightforward blade front and notch rear sights supported basic marksmanship. Today, Crack Shot No. 26 rifles are appreciated not just as quaint historical artifacts of early American small-bore shooting culture but also as affordable, interesting pieces for collectors and enthusiasts of antique rimfire firearms, with values and conditions varying widely based on age, finish, and completeness.
