The Taurus PT92AF is a full-size semi-automatic pistol produced by Taurus International and is one of the most recognizable service handguns in the company’s history, known for combining the proven open-slide design of the early Beretta 92 pattern with Taurus-specific refinements and long-standing affordability. Chambered in 9×19mm, the PT92AF operates on a short-recoil, locked-breech system with a traditional double-action/single-action trigger mechanism, allowing a longer first-shot pull followed by lighter single-action shots once the slide cycles. The model traces its roots to the early 1980s, when Taurus acquired the former Beretta manufacturing facility in São Paulo and continued production using machinery and technical experience associated with the original design lineage. Unlike later Beretta 92 variants that use slide-mounted controls, the PT92AF is especially known for its frame-mounted ambidextrous safety, a feature many shooters prefer because it is easier to reach and allows more intuitive manipulation. The pistol features an alloy frame and a steel slide, offering durability while reducing weight compared with all-steel service pistols. Standard magazine capacity has varied by era, with many examples using 15- or 17-round magazines.
