Item Description
According to original Guns & Ammo Magazine correspondence personally signed by Elmer Keith, along with the accompanying period bank draft documenting the transaction, this TDE Auto Mag Model 180 is directly attributable to Elmer Keith himself. Keith stands as one of the most influential figures in American firearms history—a pioneering writer, experimenter, and advocate whose work in high-powered revolver cartridges directly contributed to the development of the .44 Magnum and helped shape modern handgun performance standards. As Executive Editor of Guns & Ammo and a widely respected authority, firearms associated with Keith carry a level of historical importance that extends far beyond the firearm itself.
From a collector’s standpoint, documented provenance to Elmer Keith is extraordinarily rare, particularly when supported by original, period-correct documentation such as signed correspondence and financial records tied to a specific transaction. Unlike anecdotal attributions, this level of verification firmly establishes a direct connection to one of the most legendary figures in firearms lore. When combined with the inherent desirability of the TDE Auto Mag platform—already a highly sought-after and limited-production pistol—this example represents a convergence of rarity, historical significance, and documented ownership that is seldom encountered. Pieces of this nature are not only scarce, but often considered cornerstone items within advanced collections, offering a tangible link to the legacy of one of the most influential voices in American shooting history.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .44 Auto Mag pistol (AMP) is a semi-automatic pistol that uses a large caliber. It was designed by the Auto Mag Corporation between 1966 and 1971 to make a .44 AMP chambered semi-automatic pistol. The pistol has gained popularity due to its reputation and looks, making it a hit in cinema and novels. The ATF lists several versions of the pistol as “Curios and Relics.” In 1970, the Auto Mag Corporation's president, Harry Sanford, opened a factory in Pasadena, California. The factory shipped its first pistol on August 8, 1971. However, the company declared bankruptcy on May 3, 1972, after producing fewer than 3,000 pistols. The company opened and closed several times from 1973 through 1982 under various names, including TDE (Trade Deed Estates), OMC, Thomas Oil Company, High Standard, and AMT (Arcadia Machine & Tool). During this period, an additional 6,000 pistols were produced and sold, bringing the total number of pistols produced to approximately 9,000. After Harry Sanford's death in 1996, his son Walter continued selling spare parts online through automagparts.com. The production guns were made in .44 AMP, while experimental pistols were made in .45 ACP, .30 AMP, .357 AMP, and .41 JMP. Changing calibers typically only required exchanging the barrel since the frame, magazine, and bolt could be used with all calibers except .45 ACP.
