The Thompson/Center G2 Contender is a highly versatile break-action single-shot firearm platform developed by Thompson/Center Arms as an evolution of the original Contender system, combining exceptional modularity, precision, and interchangeable-caliber capability into one of the most distinctive hunting and target-shooting firearms ever produced. Introduced in the early 2000s, the G2 Contender retained the famous interchangeable-barrel design that made the original Contender legendary among handgun hunters and specialty shooters, while incorporating an improved firing system and easier operation, eliminating the need to manually select firing pins between rimfire and centerfire cartridges. The platform could be configured as either a handgun or rifle simply by changing barrels, stocks, and forends, allowing shooters to use dozens of different chamberings ranging from .17 HMR and .22 LR to powerful cartridges such as .45-70 Government, .30-30 Winchester, and .35 Remington. One of the defining characteristics of the G2 Contender is its compact break-action design, which features a robust locking system and an interchangeable-barrel arrangement that allows users to quickly swap calibers with minimal tools. The redesigned G2 frame featured a selector-free rebounding hammer system and easier opening mechanism compared to the original Contender, making the firearm more user-friendly while maintaining compatibility with many original Contender barrels and accessories. Most G2 Contenders featured blued or stainless-steel frames paired with walnut or composite furniture, and the barrels were commonly drilled and tapped for optics, reflecting the platform’s popularity in handgun hunting and precision silhouette shooting.
