The Thompson/Center White Mountain Carbine is a compact traditional-style muzzleloading rifle designed for hunters and black powder enthusiasts who want the handling characteristics of a short, lightweight woods rifle combined with the craftsmanship and reliability for which Thompson/Center Arms became well known. Introduced during the resurgence of interest in muzzleloading hunting in the late 20th century, the White Mountain Carbine was built as a percussion-cap blackpowder rifle intended primarily for hunting in dense woodland environments, where quick handling and portability were especially valuable. Typically chambered in .50 caliber, though some rifles were also produced in .45 caliber, the rifle utilized a traditional sidelock percussion ignition system in which a percussion cap placed on the nipple ignited the black powder charge through an external hammer mechanism. One of the defining characteristics of the White Mountain Carbine was its shorter barrel length compared to full-length Hawken-style muzzleloaders, giving the rifle a lighter and more maneuverable feel in thick brush, tree stands, and mountain terrain.
