The Weatherby Mark V, introduced in 1958, is Roy Weatherby’s first proprietary bolt-action rifle, engineered to handle the extreme pressures of his high-velocity magnum cartridges. While designed as a mechanical powerhouse, premier, flagship configuration—the Mark V Deluxe—became the definitive visual symbol of the company. The Deluxe pioneered a distinctive, high-gloss aesthetic that broke completely away from traditional, understated European rifle designs. Its signature nine-lug, interrupted-screw bolt provides maximum strength while allowing a short 54-degree lift for faster, smoother cycling. Early production involved Pacific Founders Inc. in California, which manufactured the initial investment-cast receivers, while Weatherby assembled and finished the rifles at his South Gate facility. However, the early casting process caused minor-metal porosity, making it difficult to achieve the flawless, mirror-finish, high-gloss bluing required for the Deluxe. Consequently, by 1959, full production moved to J.P. Sauer & Sohn in West Germany, where forged steel receivers and hammer-forged barrels were crafted to exacting standards. These German-made Mark V Deluxe rifles—featuring hand-selected, high-grade Claro walnut stocks, an exaggerated Monte Carlo comb, rosewood accents, and deep-mirror bluing—are highly prized by collectors today. In the early 1970s, manufacturing shifted to Howa in Japan due to rising European labor costs. Many collectors note that Howa-made Deluxe rifles exhibit precise machining and wood-to-metal finishes that rival J.P. Sauer-made guns.

It was also during the Japanese era that a downsized, six-lug version of the action (created for the Varmintmaster) was integrated into the Deluxe lineup, allowing the traditional wood-and-blued rifle to be chambered in standard, non-magnum calibers. The Mark V platform allowed Weatherby to move beyond Mauser-based actions, creating a fully proprietary design capable of handling experimental cartridges exceeding 100,000 psi. Over the years, the Deluxe has remained the timeless anchor of the Mark V lineup, even as Weatherby introduced modern synthetic variants like the Accumark and Backcountry. True to its legacy, the Deluxe continues to be chambered in nearly every legendary Weatherby Magnum ever produced—including the .224, .240, .257, .270, .300, .340, .30-378, .378, .416, and .460 Weatherby Magnums—as well as popular standard cartridges like the .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor. A major redesign in 2016 introduced the “New Mark V” geometry, which directly enhanced the Deluxe.
While retaining its iconic gloss finish, fine checkering, and signature rosewood forend tip with the inlaid white diamond, the modern Deluxe was upgraded with an adjustable trigger, a slimmer stock profile with an ergonomic palm swell, and hand-lapped barrels delivering guaranteed sub-MOA accuracy. U.S. production, which initially resumed in the mid-1990s under contractors Saco Defense and Acrometal/ATEK, has reached its peak today. Following a historic corporate relocation to a state-of-the-art facility in Sheridan, Wyoming, Weatherby now manufactures the legendary Mark V Deluxe completely in-house, beautifully upholding Roy Weatherby’s legacy of innovation, luxury, and premium craftsmanship.
