Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Designed by John Moses Browning in 1878 and manufactured by Winchester starting in 1885, the Winchester Model 1885 High Wall stands as one of the most mechanically sound, rigid, and celebrated single-shot actions ever created. Famous for its vertical falling-block lockup, rapid lock time, and exceptional receiver strength, the High Wall became a favorite foundation for legendary 20th-century custom gunsmiths. This extraordinary build was crafted by master barrel maker and author W.F. Vickery of Boise, Idaho—celebrated in custom gunsmithing history for his authoritative technical writings and precision target barrels. Chambered in the hyper-velocity .22-250 Remington cartridge, a custom Vickery High Wall combines historic Browning design architecture with mid-century benchrest precision.
This specific example is a custom Winchester Model 1885 High Wall target rifle crafted by W.F. Vickery, bearing serial number 107216 on the lower tang. Inscribed on the barrel "MADE FOR ROBERT L SMITH BY W F VICKERY BOISE, IDAHO", it features a heavy 26-inch precision blued target barrel chambered in .22-250 Rem, double set triggers, and a breathtaking exhibition-grade burl walnut target stock featuring a massive Monte Carlo cheekpiece, pistol grip cap, and wide benchrest forend. Mounted atop the barrel rail is a period-correct vintage Weaver K10 fixed 10X target scope. The high-gloss blued metal surfaces present in exquisite condition throughout, displaying crisp tang roll-marks and clean barrel engraving. Mechanically, the falling-block lever action operates with glass-smooth precision, the double set trigger breaks with delicate hair-trigger crispness, and the 26-inch heavy barrel bore is mirror-bright with razor-sharp rifling. Offering an irreplaceable custom piece of Idaho gunsmithing history, this Vickery Winchester High Wall is a centerpiece for the advanced custom rifle collector.
