Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 490 is a lightweight semi-automatic rimfire rifle that was produced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company during the 1970s and early 1980s as an affordable and practical sporting rifle for hunters, recreational shooters, and plinkers. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, the Model 490 utilized a simple blowback-operated semi-automatic action that earned a reputation for dependable performance and ease of maintenance. Unlike many traditional wood-stocked rimfire rifles of the period, the 490 featured a more modern design with an alloy receiver that helped reduce overall weight while maintaining durability. The rifle fed from a detachable box magazine, allowing for quick loading and unloading and providing a convenience that many shooters appreciated in the field and on the range. Typically equipped with a hardwood stock, blued barrel, and open sights, the Model 490 offered a balance of simplicity, reliability, and affordability that made it appealing to a wide variety of shooters. Its relatively light weight and comfortable handling characteristics made it especially suitable for carrying during long days of small-game hunting or casual shooting sessions. Mechanically, the rifle was designed to function with a broad range of .22 LR ammunition, and many examples developed a reputation for dependable operation and respectable accuracy. In practical use, the Model 490 excelled as a general-purpose sporting rifle, equally at home hunting squirrels and rabbits, teaching new shooters the fundamentals of marksmanship, or providing inexpensive recreational shooting. While it never achieved the widespread fame of some competing rimfire rifles, the Winchester 490 remains appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts as a well-made representative of Winchester’s rimfire offerings during the latter half of the twentieth century. Today, surviving examples continue to provide reliable service and are valued for their lightweight design, detachable magazine system, and connection to Winchester’s long tradition of American sporting firearms.
