Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Born from a massive post–World War II strategic refurbishment program initiated in 1947, the M24/47 is a Yugoslav Mauser-pattern bolt-action rifle. Rather than being newly manufactured, these rugged military rifles were rebuilt from existing pre-war Kingdom of Yugoslavia M24s—many of which were originally produced under license from Belgium’s FN and manufactured at the Kragujevac Arsenal (later Zastava Arms). The M24/47 is chambered in 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) and retained the intermediate-length Mauser 98 action of the original M24s. During the rebuild process, the rifles received new barrels, reblued metal finishes, and updated stocks crafted from beech, recycled walnut, or locally sourced elm. Worn or damaged components were replaced, and the firearms were stamped with the Yugoslav communist crest, “M24/47,” and often marked with “Preduzece 44,” identifying the primary state arsenal responsible for the refurbishments. Notably, some examples still show faint traces—or “ghost marks”—of the original royal crests or manufacturer markings beneath the newer stamps, offering a fascinating glimpse into their pre-war heritage. The rifle features a straight bolt handle, a five-round internal magazine loaded via stripper clips, and a heavy-duty profile. Though often confused with the later M48, the M24/47 lacks the M48’s cupped buttplate and turned-down bolt handle. Known for their durability, solid accuracy, and affordability on the surplus market, M24/47 rifles remain a favorite among collectors and shooters alike, representing a blend of pre-war craftsmanship and post-war Yugoslav industrial revival.
