The Zastava M88 is a compact single-action semi-automatic pistol developed by Zastava Arms in the former Yugoslavia in 1987 as a modernized, more compact evolution of the Tokarev-based M57 service pistol. Chambered primarily in 9×19mm Parabellum, the M88 was designed to provide military, police, and civilian users with a slimmer, more ergonomic sidearm while retaining the rugged reliability of the Tokarev operating system. It features an all-steel frame, 3.5-inch barrel, locked-breech short-recoil action, 8-round single-stack magazine, fixed sights, and single-action trigger. Early military-contract pistols lacked an external manual safety, while later M88A variants added a slide-mounted safety and firing pin block for commercial export, particularly to the U.S. Although its military service was relatively brief before being replaced by the Zastava CZ99, the M88 earned a reputation as a durable, accurate, and well-built compact pistol that remains popular among surplus firearm enthusiasts.
