Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model 1861, developed at Springfield Armory, served as the standard infantry weapon of the Union Army at the outbreak of the American Civil War. The immense demand for arms quickly forced the government to rely on private contractors, giving rise to what collectors refer to as the “Special Model 1861” rifle-musket. The origins of this system trace back to the Crimean War, when British demand for the Pattern 1853 Enfield led to contracts with American firms such as Robbins & Lawrence, a pioneer in interchangeable parts manufacturing. When those contracts were abruptly cancelled, Robbins & Lawrence collapsed, and its machinery and tooling were acquired by companies including Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company and Lamson, Goodnow & Yale, placing them in a strong position to compete for U.S. government contracts at the start of the Civil War. Under the direction of Elisha K. Root, Colt developed a variation of the Springfield pattern that incorporated practical manufacturing and design features influenced by Enfield construction, including screw-fastened barrel bands, simplified internal lock geometry, and an improved rear sight design later adopted on standard U.S. production. This contractor-produced pattern became known as the Special Model 1861, with more than 177,000 delivered to the U.S. Ordnance Department by Colt, Lamson, Goodnow & Yale, and Amoskeag.

Among these, Lamson, Goodnow & Yale of Windsor, Vermont, produced approximately 50,020 rifle-muskets between 1862 and 1864. Built to .58-caliber specifications and fully compatible with government-issued ammunition and logistics, these percussion, muzzleloading rifles featured a 40-inch rifled barrel and standard military configuration, while displaying subtle contractor-specific variations in machining and finish. The Lamson, Goodnow & Yale Special Model 1861 stands as a representative example of Civil War industrial arms production, illustrating how established design, private manufacturing, and wartime necessity combined to equip the Union Army.
