Markings: Standard / The top of the receiver is marked with the letter "S", along with a "Crown over Erfurt", and the date of manufacture "1892". The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number "785C" and "GEW. 91." The right side of the receiver is marked with three crown/letter proof marks. The left side of the front sight is marked "ll.A.F.2.H.17."

The Gewehr 91, officially adopted in 1891, was Germany’s specialized short-barrel response to the operational needs of artillery, technical, and support troops who required a compact personal weapon that fired the revolutionary 7.92x57mm Patrone 88 (M/88) smokeless cartridge. Developed alongside the cavalry’s Karabiner 88, the Gewehr 91 was uniquely equipped with a prominent metal stacking hook beneath the muzzle, allowing foot artillery crews to hook multiple carbines together into a tripod structure to keep them clear of the mud while operating heavy machinery. The carbine retained the core mechanical features of the Commission Rifle design, including a full-length metal barrel shroud and a top-loading, five-round Mannlicher-style en-bloc clip system. As ballistic technology advanced, existing Gewehr 91 units underwent a vital upgrade beginning in 1905 to accommodate the high-pressure, pointed 7.92x57mm “S” Patrone, a modification easily identified by an “S” stamp on the receiver ring. Though slated for replacement by Mauser 98-pattern carbines by 1910, the outbreak of World War I forced Germany to deploy every available Gewehr 91 to front-line and rear-guard units, where its lightweight, 37.5-inch length made it the ideal defense weapon for bicycle infantry, supply drivers, medical corpsmen, and balloon observers. Unlike the standard infantry rifles, the Gewehr 91 was never adapted to the 88/05 standard or exported for Turkish modernization; instead, its military service came to an abrupt end following the Great War when the strict disarmament mandates of the Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to purge and destroy these obsolete carbines.
