The Erfurt Gewehr 91 (Gew. 91) is a historically significant German military carbine that represents an important transitional period in the development of modern military rifles. Produced by the Königlich Preußische Gewehrfabrik Erfurt during the early 1890s, the Gewehr 91 was a shortened version of the Gewehr 88 Commission Rifle, created primarily for cavalry, artillery, engineers, and support troops who required a more compact firearm than the full-length infantry rifle. Chambered originally in 7.9×57mm with the Patrone 88 cartridge, the Gewehr 91 incorporated the innovative features of the Gewehr 88 design, including the Mannlicher-style en-bloc clip loading system, barrel jacket, and early smokeless powder cartridge technology. As Germany advanced its small-arms technology, many Gewehr 88-pattern rifles and carbines, including the Gewehr 91, underwent the S-Patrone (Spitzer) conversion, which updated them for the newer pointed 7.92×57mm ammunition adopted in the early 1900s. These modifications commonly included chamber and barrel alterations, often identified by an “S” marking, allowing the rifles to safely fire the higher-performance spitzer cartridge.
