Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt New Service Model 1909 was developed specifically to meet U.S. military demand following dissatisfaction with the stopping power of earlier .38 caliber service revolvers. Adopted after lessons learned during the Philippine–American War, the Model 1909 was chambered in .45 Colt, restoring confidence in a larger-caliber sidearm for combat effectiveness. Built on Colt’s robust New Service frame, it was designed for durability and reliability under harsh field conditions, becoming one of the strongest double-action revolvers of its era. Distinctive features of the Model 1909 include its military lanyard loop on the butt, inspector markings, and the use of a modified .45 Colt cartridge with a larger rim to improve extraction reliability—an important improvement over earlier revolver ammunition. These revolvers were issued primarily to U.S. Army personnel and saw service during a transitional period before the widespread adoption of semi-automatic pistols like the Colt M1911 pistol. Today, the Model 1909 holds strong collector appeal due to its direct military association, limited production relative to later service arms, and its role as a bridge between 19th-century revolver doctrine and 20th-century semi-automatic innovation. Examples with clear U.S. Army markings, original finish, and correct military features are especially desirable, representing an important chapter in American martial firearms history.
Return Policy:
We gladly offer a 3-day unfired inspection policy from the time that the firearm is delivered to your FFL. Refunds are available for all qualifying orders.
