Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the Moro uprising in the Philippines in the 1890s, the Colt New Army & Navy revolver in .38 Long Colt failed because radical Islamic warriors, often using drugs, attacked US soldiers and managed to hack them to death even after being shot multiple times with the ineffective rounds. With the situation critical and the confidence in the standard-issue cartridge lost, the Army quickly refurbished Colt Single Action Army revolvers, shortened their 7 1/2" barrels to 5 1/2", and rushed them to the Philippines, where the .45 Long Colt successfully did the job, convincing the Army that they needed a modern, more powerful service pistol. While this breakthrough eventually led to the adoption of the Colt Model 1911 .45 Automatic, it left the military without a viable sidearm to use during the developmental gap. To serve as an immediate fill-in, the military turned to Colt and purchased the New Service revolver in .45 Colt—a well-proven, double-action revolver and cartridge combination chosen to replace the failed New Army & Navy guns until the new automatic was ready. Since the New Service was already in mass production, the military officially adopted it as the U.S. Army Model 1909 revolver, simply ordering the guns furnished in Colt's full commercial finish. This meant these standard-type firearms featured a 5 1/2" barrel, a bright blue commercial-quality finish, a lanyard loop, and distinct US military serial numbers and stamps on the butt, marking them for the US Army, US Navy, or US Marines.
