The Colt Service Model Ace stands as one of the most mechanically fascinating and historically significant training handguns developed for the United States military. Introduced in 1937 to provide a low-cost .22 LR training platform that mimicked the exact recoil impulse, weight, and manual of arms of the standard-issue Service Model 1911A1, the Service Model Ace revolutionized rimfire marksmanship training. Designed by legendary gunsmith David Marshall "Carbine" Williams, the pistol’s defining technical feature is its floating chamber mechanism, which multiplies the light recoil of the .22 Long Rifle cartridge to simulate the feel of a full-power .45 ACP sidearm. Manufactured in 1945 during the closing months of World War II, serial number SM3794 represents an authentic late-war production example bearing the iconic "SM" (Service Model) serial prefix. During the war effort, these pistols were deployed directly to military shooting teams, training facilities, and defense force armorers to hone marksmanship fundamentals while preserving precious .45 ACP ammunition reserves.
