Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Frontier Scout “F-Series” followed the initial Q-Series introduced in 1957 and entered production in 1958, becoming one of Colt’s primary postwar rimfire single-action revolver lines. Early F-Series revolvers were produced in a distinctive duo-tone configuration with “in-the-white” aluminum alloy receivers and grip frames paired with blued steel barrels and cylinders; in 1958, Colt added an all-blue finish with the alloy components anodized dark blue to match the steel parts. That same year, the long-barreled Buntline Scout model was introduced with a 9 1/2-inch barrel, typically marked “Buntline Scout”, along with optional walnut grips. In 1959, Colt introduced the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire chambering, with revolvers marked “.22 Magnum” and Magnum barrels distinguished by rounded crowns while .22 LR barrels retained flat crowns. The duo-tone finish was discontinued in 1961 after an estimated 40,000 units, and a decorative scroll pattern was stamped into the bottom of the grip frame that same year. In 1964, Colt introduced dual-cylinder Frontier Scouts capable of firing both .22 LR and .22 Magnum cartridges, marked “.22 CAL,” with barrels pinned into the alloy frames in the mid-1964 serial range to prevent barrel rotation. In 1969, Colt introduced dual-cylinder Buntline Scouts while discontinuing the .22 Magnum as a standalone chambering. Produced from 1958 through 1971 with approximately 246,000 revolvers manufactured and the highest known serial number recorded at 245423F, the Frontier Scout F-Series is highly prized by collectors for its extensive production variations, classic Colt styling, and important role in Colt’s postwar single-action rimfire lineage.
