The Walther PP (Polizeipistole) is a blowback-operated semi-automatic pistol developed by German arms manufacturer Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen. Introduced in 1929 as a full-size duty model for European police and administrative use, it became one of the world's first commercially successful double-action semi-automatic pistols, featuring an exposed hammer, a traditional double-action/single-action trigger, a single-column magazine, and a fixed barrel that doubles as the recoil spring guide rod. Produced in multiple calibers—most commonly 7.65mm (.32 ACP), 9mm Kurz (.380 ACP), .22 LR, and 6.35mm (.25 ACP)—the pistol was manufactured by Walther in Germany and under license by Manurhin in France, before a formal multi-year production suspension was enacted to undergo a thorough modernization program. The PP was heavily issued during World War II to the German military and police forces, and its post-war service continued prominently with agencies such as the West German Bavarian State Police, who stamped their pistols with an oval "ByP" (Bayern Polizei) property mark. When these surplus service weapons were later retired and sold commercially, armorers officially "X'd out" or struck through the ByP insignia to denote legal decommissioning from state inventory.
