Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Walther PP (Polizeipistole, or police pistol) series are blowback-operated semi-automatics developed by Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen. Walther pistols include the PP, PPK, PPK/S, and PPK/E models. These pistols have an exposed hammer, a traditional double-action trigger mechanism, a single-column magazine, and a fixed barrel that also serves as the guide rod for the recoil spring. In 1971, the Walther TPH pocket pistol was introduced, a smaller caliber pistol that operates and handles the same way as the PPK. The PP series is manufactured in various countries, including Germany, France, and the United States. Previously, the PPK version was produced by Walther in Germany, Manurhin in France, Interarms in Virginia, and Smith & Wesson in Maine under license. Since 2018, the PPK and PPK/S models have been manufactured at Walther Arms, Inc., a US-based subsidiary.

The PP and PPK were some of the first double-action semi-automatic pistols that became successful worldwide. Walther is still producing the PPK, but the PP stopped being manufactured in 1999 and has been widely replicated. The design of these pistols has inspired the creation of other models like the Soviet Makarov, the Hungarian FEG PA-63, the Polish P-64, the American Accu-Tek AT-380 II, and the Argentinian Bersa Thunder 380. European police and civilians highly regarded the PP and PPK for their reliability and concealability. During World War II, these guns were given to German military officers, including the Luftwaffe, as well as to uniformed Ordnungspolizei and plainclothes detectives of the Kriminalpolizei.

The PP was originally released in 1929 as a semi-automatic pistol intended for police use in Europe during the 1930s and beyond. It operated using a basic blowback action and was designed with various safety features, including an automatic hammer block, a combination safety/decocker, and a loaded chamber indicator. These features were innovative for their time and helped ensure the user's safety.
