The Colt SP1 is one of the most historically significant civilian sporting rifles ever produced, serving as the commercial counterpart to the military M16 and as the foundation for the modern AR-15 market. Manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company, the SP1 was introduced in 1964 and offered civilian shooters the opportunity to own a semi-automatic version of the revolutionary rifle being adopted by the United States military. Chambered in .223 Remington and built with lightweight aluminum receivers and synthetic furniture, the SP1 retained many of the early M16 characteristics, including the pencil-profile barrel, triangular handguards, fixed carry handle, and slab-sided lower receiver without a magazine fence.
