Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Engineered by Dan Coonan while attending university in the late 1970s, the Coonan .357 Magnum Automatic stands as one of the most remarkable accomplishments in modern handgun design. While firearms lore once claimed a rimmed revolver cartridge could never be reliably fed through an autoloader magazine, Coonan mastered the geometry by modifying 1911 architecture with a proprietary linkless tilting barrel system, an external pivoting trigger, and specialized magazine geometry. The Model A represents Dan Coonan's original production design manufactured in St. Paul, Minnesota. Highly coveted by serious oddity, magnum, and semi-automatic collectors, low three-digit Model A examples like this represent the pure genesis of Dan Coonan's magnum autoloading concept.
This specific example is an authentic, rare early Coonan Arms Model A .357 Magnum automatic pistol, bearing ultra-low 3-digit serial number 292. Finished entirely in factory brushed and matte stainless steel, it features a 5-inch stainless steel barrel, original combat sights, single-sided extended thumb safety, and smooth figured walnut grip panels. The stainless steel surfaces show honest vintage handling and aging, with light freckling on the grip strap and slide flats consistent with its historic early-production lineage. Mechanically, the linkless action cycles with authority, the unique trigger break is crisp, and the 5-inch bore is bright with sharp, well-defined rifling.
