The Colt Double Eagle Series 90 was Colt's ambitious foray into the world of double-action/single-action (DA/SA) semi-automatic pistols during a time when law enforcement and civilian markets were beginning to demand modernized versions of classic designs. Introduced in the late 1980s, the Double Eagle was heavily based on the venerable M1911 platform, featuring a DA/SA trigger mechanism, aligning Colt with contemporary trends led by competitors like Sig Sauer and Beretta. The Double Eagle retained the familiar lines of the 1911, incorporating significant internal reengineering, including a decocking lever and a trigger system allowing the first shot to be fired in double-action, with subsequent shots reverting to single-action. Offered in full-size Government, mid-size Commander, and compact Officer configurations, the pistol was standardly chambered in .45 ACP and 10mm Auto; however, Colt expanded the regular catalog in 1992 to introduce .40 S&W for the smaller frames, alongside 9mm and .38 Super options for the full-size platform, all of which became exceptionally scarce due to immediate low sales and quick cancellation.
