The Colt Double Eagle Series 90 is a distinctive semi-automatic pistol produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company during the late 1980s and 1990s, representing Colt’s effort to modernize the classic 1911 platform by incorporating a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger system. Chambered most commonly in .45 ACP, though also offered in calibers such as 10mm Auto and 9mm, the Double Eagle retained the overall profile and ergonomics of the traditional 1911 while eliminating the need for a manual thumb safety, instead relying on a double-action first trigger pull for safe carry. The “Series 90” designation refers to Colt’s updated firing pin safety system, which enhances drop safety without significantly affecting trigger feel. Mechanically, the pistol operates with a conventional short-recoil system derived from the original John Moses Browning design, but with a more complex internal linkage to accommodate the DA/SA function, allowing the hammer to be decocked safely using a frame-mounted decocking lever. The Double Eagle typically features a 5-inch barrel, a steel frame and slide, and rubber wraparound grips that provide a secure hold, especially given the increased trigger reach required for double-action operation. 
 
While it offered the familiarity of the 1911’s grip angle and handling characteristics, the added complexity of the trigger system and internal components made it somewhat less popular among purists who preferred the simplicity and crisp single-action trigger of the original design. Nevertheless, the Double Eagle Series 90 found a niche among shooters looking for a traditional-looking pistol with modern safety features and a DA/SA capability. Today, it stands as an interesting transitional firearm in Colt’s history—neither a true 1911 nor a fully modern design—but a unique hybrid that reflects the evolving preferences of American handgun users during the late 20th century.
