Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Baikal IZH-43E-1C is a rugged Russian-made side-by-side double-barrel shotgun produced by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant and imported into many countries under the Baikal and, later, MP-43 designations, earning a long-standing reputation for extreme durability, simple construction, and dependable field performance at an affordable price. Manufactured since the mid-1980s, the IZH-43 series was developed as an evolution of earlier Soviet double guns such as the IZH-58, combining traditional side-by-side styling with stronger lockwork and simplified manufacturing intended to withstand hard use in harsh hunting environments. The “E-1C” designation identifies one of the more desirable variants in the lineup, featuring selective ejectors and a single selective-trigger system, allowing the shooter to choose the firing order between barrels while automatically ejecting spent shells when the action is opened. Chambered most commonly in 12 gauge but also produced in smaller gauges, including 20 gauge and .410 bore, the IZH-43E-1C became especially popular among working hunters, farmers, and outdoorsmen because of its reputation for functioning reliably even under rough treatment and poor weather conditions. One of the defining characteristics of the shotgun is its heavy-duty boxlock action and robust steel construction, giving the gun a somewhat crude but extremely solid feel that many shooters compare to military equipment. The shotgun typically features blued steel barrels, simple-engraved receiver panels, walnut or beech stocks, double extractors or ejectors depending on the model, and fixed or interchangeable choke systems depending on the production year and export configuration.

Mechanically, the shotgun uses a traditional break-action design with an Anson & Deeley–style action body and an automatic safety, while the single-trigger mechanism with a barrel selector gives it more modern functionality than many older side-by-side hunting guns. In practical use, the Baikal IZH-43E-1C developed a loyal following because of its reliability, smooth swing, and ability to withstand decades of hunting abuse with minimal maintenance. Shooters frequently described Baikal shotguns as “built like tanks,” valuing them more for durability and honest utility than refined finish or lightweight handling. The shotgun became especially common among upland bird hunters, small-game hunters, and practical shooters who appreciated its low cost and dependable operation. In export markets, many versions were also sold under names such as Remington Spartan after import agreements with Remington Arms. Although the finish and machining were often considered rough compared to high-end European doubles, the IZH-43E-1C earned widespread respect for its reliability, strong lockup, and surprising longevity. Today, the Baikal IZH-43E-1C is regarded as one of the most durable and recognizable Russian side-by-side shotguns ever imported, appreciated for its no-nonsense construction, Soviet-era toughness, and enduring reputation as a hardworking field gun built to last generations.
