Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Manufactured in Belgium during the 20th century, the Belgian Cowboy Ranger is a double/single-action revolver produced for the export trade and designed to emulate the iconic profile and styling of the Colt Single Action Army and Colt 1877 “Lightning” revolvers. Sold under the “Cowboy Ranger” trade name rather than the name of a specific manufacturer, these revolvers were commonly produced by small Belgian workshops and exported to the United States through large mail-order retailers such as Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Montgomery Ward as affordable alternatives to more expensive American-made handguns. Chambered in .38 Colt / .38 Special, this example features a color case-hardened frame paired with a blued 5 3/8" barrel, a combination of finishes commonly found on imported European revolvers of the period. The revolver utilizes a traditional side-loading gate and manual ejector rod system, while the sighting arrangement consists of a fixed blade front sight and an integral notch rear sight. Adding to its distinctive appearance are genuine ivory grips, which enhance the overall presentation and contrast nicely with the vivid metal finishes. Today, surviving examples such as this remain interesting representations of the global firearms trade and the enduring popularity of Western-inspired sidearms during the late frontier and early industrial age.
