The Colt Third Model Derringer (Thuer Model) is a distinctive, single-shot pocket pistol manufactured in-house by Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. in Hartford, Connecticut, between 1875 and 1912. This historic line represented the pinnacle of 19th-century concealed-carry engineering, serving as a primary backup weapon for gamblers, travelers, and citizens who required discreet protection. Chambered in the powerful .41 Rimfire cartridge, this model was introduced during the height of the American Wild West era. Mechanically, the firearm relies on elegant simplicity: rather than using a break-open action, it features a traditional side-swing steel barrel that pivots to the right, engaging an automatic, spring-loaded extractor designed by F. Alexander Thuer to eject the spent shell casing. Visually, standard production variants feature a classic two-tone aesthetic, pairing a solid brass frame with a blued steel barrel, all beautifully complemented by smooth, dark walnut bird's-head grips. Small, light, and easily hidden in a vest pocket, it was highly regarded as a functional, close-range defensive sidearm and remains an iconic piece of authentic frontier history.
