Designed by legendary Hungarian arms designer Rudolf Frommer in the late 1920s, the 29M (Pisztoly 29.Minta) was officially adopted in 1929 as the standard sidearm of the Royal Hungarian Army (Magyar Királyi Honvédség). Built at the historic Fegyver- és Gépgyár (FEG) arsenal in Budapest, the 29M transitioned Hungary away from Frommer's earlier complex long-recoil designs (such as the Frommer Stop) in favor of a simpler, highly reliable direct-blowback mechanism. Key mechanical features include an external cocking hammer, a dual-piece slide w/ a threaded/screw-in rear cocking cap, a frame-mounted automatic grip safety, integrated lanyard loop, and grooved walnut stock grips. Celebrated for its unique engineering and Interwar/WWII Hungarian military service, the 29M laid the structural groundwork for the subsequent 37M and WWII German-contract Pistole 37(u).
