The MSAR STG-556 Black 16.5" 5.56 NATO is a semi-automatic bull-pup rifle produced by Microtech Small Arms Research (MSAR) and designed as an American-made interpretation of the Austrian Steyr Arms AUG platform. Chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO, it is also capable of safely firing .223 Remington ammunition. The rifle features a compact bull-pup layout that places the action behind the trigger, allowing a full-length rifle barrel in a much shorter overall package. Featuring a 16.5-inch barrel, short-stroke gas piston operating system, rotating bolt design, and quick-change barrel capability, the STG-556 offers reliable operation with reduced fouling compared with traditional direct-gas AR-style rifles. Its polymer stock, integrated optic/rail system options, and ambidextrous controls give it a distinctive modern design while maintaining the handling characteristics that made the AUG family popular. 
 
The black-finished STG-556 was one of MSAR's most recognizable models and was produced in limited numbers from approximately 2007 until the company ceased operations in 2015. Early examples used proprietary AUG-pattern magazines, while later variants such as the XM17-E4 incorporated compatibility with standard AR-15/STANAG magazines. Collectors and shooters value the STG-556 for its unique bullpup design, American manufacture, limited production history, and its place as one of the few commercially available AUG-style rifles produced in the United States.
