Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Norinco / Century International Arms (CAI) MAK-90 is one of the most desirable and best-built imported AK-pattern rifles ever brought into the United States, prized by collectors for its exceptional Chinese manufacturing quality, reliability, and historical significance. The MAK-90, short for "Modified AK-1990," was developed by Norinco following the 1989 U.S. import restrictions, with modifications such as a thumbhole stock, removed bayonet lug, and non-threaded muzzle to satisfy the "sporting purposes" requirements while retaining the legendary reliability of the Chinese Type 56 platform. Imported by Century International Arms, these rifles are chambered in 7.62×39mm and feature a long-stroke gas piston operating system, rotating bolt, chrome-lined barrel, and robust stamped or, in much rarer cases, milled receiver. Chinese MAK-90s are especially respected for their 1.5–1.6mm stamped receivers, smooth double-hook triggers, excellent machining, and superior fit and finish compared to many other imported AK variants. Today, original, unmodified examples retaining their factory thumbhole stocks, matching serial numbers, and original Chinese components are highly sought after by advanced AK collectors, particularly those with the desirable straight-cut receiver, which allows compatibility with standard fixed-stock furniture. As one of the last Chinese AK-pattern rifles imported before the 1994 ban on Chinese firearms imports, the Norinco / CAI MAK-90 has become a true collector-grade rifle, admired for its outstanding durability, smooth operation, and its place in the history of imported Kalashnikov-pattern firearms.
