Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This Norinco NHM-90 is a semi-automatic, AK-pattern sporting rifle manufactured by China’s premier military arsenal, State Factory 626 (known to collectors by its "Triangle 66" stamp), and exported to the United States via the China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) between 1990 and 1994. The model’s creation was a direct, frantic response to President George H.W. Bush’s 1989 Executive Order, which banned the importation of military-style "assault weapons." To rescue inventory trapped in customs warehouses or mid-transit, Chinese factories were forced to hastily modify their existing, highly regarded pre-ban Type 84S (5.56x45mm) and Type 56 (7.62x39mm) rifles to meet new U.S. "sporting purposes" regulations. Workers literally lined out, overstamped, or obliterated the original military model markings on the receiver, replacing them with the new "NHM-90" designation. To comply with the law, the rifles were stripped of their standard pistol grips and military-style stocks in favor of one-piece wooden thumbhole stocks, while their bayonet lugs were ground off. To mask the factory barrel threads and achieve varying compliant lengths, importers utilized three distinct configurations depending on the batch: a standard tack-welded muzzle nut, a blind-pinned thread protector with no exposed external weld, or a long two-inch smooth sleeve extension—frequently resulting in an extended 17 3/4" barrel profile.

This temporary import window slammed shut permanently in 1994 when President Bill Clinton enacted a broader trade embargo on Chinese firearms, turning the short-lived NHM-90 into a highly prized, collectible artifact of American gun control history. Because these rifles were built on pristine pre-ban foundations, they have become the ultimate candidates for "de-banning." This restoration process allows collectors to remove the restricted post-ban thumbhole furniture and reverse importer muzzle modifications, fully restoring the rifle to its highly coveted, original military configuration with a standalone pistol grip and threaded muzzle.
