The Norinco NHM-90 is a Chinese AK-pattern semi-automatic rifle manufactured by Norinco and imported into the United States in the early 1990s following the 1989 import restrictions. Chambered primarily in 7.62×39mm (with a less common 5.56×45mm variant), the NHM-90 is mechanically based on the Chinese Type 56 AK, utilizing a long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating two-lug bolt, a design renowned for exceptional reliability and simplicity. Unlike many standard AKM-pattern rifles, the NHM-90 features a 1.5 mm stamped steel receiver rather than the traditional 1.0 mm receiver, providing increased rigidity and durability. It also incorporates a chrome-lined barrel and chamber, forged internal components, and compatibility with standard AK-pattern magazines. To comply with U.S. import regulations, the rifle was imported with a thumbhole stock, no bayonet lug, and other "sporting" features, though many examples have since been restored to a more traditional Type 56 appearance.
