The Remington Model 4 Rolling Block chambered in .32 Short/Long Rimfire is a classic American single-shot rifle that represents the craftsmanship and simplicity of late 19th and early 20th century sporting firearms. Introduced in 1890 and produced until approximately 1933, the Model 4 was one of Remington’s most successful small-caliber rolling block rifles, with total production estimated at roughly 356,000 rifles. Designed by Remington engineers F.A. Houghton, J.O. Simpson, and O.H. Loomis, the Model 4 utilized a compact version of Remington’s famous rolling block action, known for its strength, simplicity, and reliability. Chambered in .32 Short and .32 Long Rimfire, the rifle was intended for economical target shooting, small-game hunting, farm use, and youth marksmanship. The single-shot action requires the shooter to manually load each cartridge, making it a practical and safe platform that emphasizes careful shooting technique and accuracy.
 

The Model 4 features a solid steel receiver, exposed hammer, rolling block breech design, blued steel barrel, and a traditional walnut stock and fore-end. Early examples were commonly produced with octagon barrels, while later rifles were also offered with round barrels and takedown configurations. The .32 rimfire chambering provided mild recoil and was well suited for small game and recreational shooting, although original ammunition has become increasingly difficult to find today due to the obsolete nature of the cartridge. Collectors appreciate the Remington Model 4 for its historic importance, graceful lines, and connection to the company’s legendary rolling block designs. Well-preserved examples with strong original finish, clear markings, good bores, and intact walnut stocks are especially desirable among collectors of vintage American rimfire rifles.
