Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger MK II Target is a highly respected semi-automatic rimfire pistol that was built upon the success of the original Standard and Mark I series, becoming one of the most popular and durable .22 LR target handguns ever produced. Manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. from the early 1980s through the mid-2000s, the MK II introduced several practical improvements over earlier models, most notably a last-round bolt hold-open feature and increased magazine capacity, while retaining the rugged fixed-barrel blowback design that made the platform famous for reliability and accuracy. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, the Target variants were specifically configured for precision shooting, informal competition, and serious recreational use, often featuring heavy bull barrels in lengths such as 5.5 inches and 6.875 inches, as well as other configurations that added forward weight for steadier aim and reduced muzzle movement. The fixed barrel design is one of the pistol’s greatest strengths, as the barrel remains rigidly mounted to the receiver rather than tilting during cycling, contributing to excellent inherent accuracy that frequently exceeded expectations for a factory rimfire pistol. Construction is all steel, available in blued or stainless finishes depending on model, giving the MK II Target a solid, durable feel and long service life. Grips ranged from checkered plastic to wood target stocks, depending on configuration, while adjustable rear sights and a Patridge-style front sight were common on target models, allowing precise sight alignment and zeroing.

In practical use, the MK II Target earned a legendary reputation for digesting a wide range of ammunition, producing tight groups, and withstanding extremely high round counts with minimal wear. Shooters often praised its crisp single-action trigger, comfortable grip angle inspired by the Luger/Nambu lineage, and excellent balance in bull-barrel versions. While disassembly could be more involved than many modern pistols, owners generally accepted that tradeoff in exchange for outstanding reliability and performance. The pistol became a favorite for plinking, small-game hunting, training new shooters, and rimfire competition, and many examples have remained in active use for decades. Today, the Ruger MK II Target is regarded as one of the benchmark American rimfire pistols, valued for its precision, durability, classic styling, and enduring reputation as a do-everything .22 handgun.
