Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .38 Double-Action 5th Model is a double/single-action top-break revolver chambered in .38 S&W featuring a 5-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of approximately 1.21". Standard barrel lengths include 3 1/4", 4", 5", and 6"; a 1 1/2" barrel variation has been reported in both forged and pinned front sight configurations, either of which would be exceptionally rare. Similar to the preceding 4th Model, the revolver utilizes a top-break action and was offered in either blue or nickel finish, with nickel examples featuring a blued trigger guard. Grip options included black hard rubber stocks bearing the S&W monogram or the much rarer walnut extension-type stocks found on target-sight variations. Standard service sights consist of a round-blade front sight forged into the barrel rib and a rear sight formed by a notch cut into a raised portion of the barrel latch. Scarce target-sight models featured a square-cut blade front sight pinned into the barrel rib, paired with an adjustable rear sight mounted on the barrel latch. Additional features include a frame with a left-side sideplate secured by a single screw. Serial numbers ranged from 539001 through 554077, with approximately 15,000 manufactured circa 1909–1911.
