Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action 1st Model (popularly known as the "Baby Russian" or the Model No. 2 1st Model) is a single-action top-break revolver chambered in .38 S&W featuring a 5-shot fluted cylinder. Standard barrel lengths include 3 1/4" or 4" round configurations featuring a top rib stamped with factory patent dates. Similar to the larger Model 3 Russian from which its nickname is derived, the revolver utilizes a top-break action and was offered in either a blue or nickel finish, with nickel being the most common configuration and blued examples remaining scarcer, with an estimated 6,500 units produced. Grip choices featured standard checkered hard rubber stocks bearing the S&W monogram on a round-butt frame, though factory wood stocks were routinely substituted on blue-finished models. Standard service sights consist of a pinned round-blade front sight paired with a rear sight formed by a notch cut into a raised portion of the barrel latch. Scarce early production variations feature an added safety device called the Aldrich .38 hammer lock on the first 138 units, followed by roughly 1,000 transition pieces completed with a factory filler screw in an extra hole located on the right side of the frame just behind the recoil shield. Additional features include an exposed hammer with both half-cock and full-cock notches, a spur trigger configuration with no trigger guard, and a frame with a left-side sideplate secured by a single screw on early production, before transitioning to a two-screw configuration on later examples. While the "Baby Russian" moniker is sometimes applied to both the First and Second Model .38 single actions, the term strictly designates only the First Model due to its longer under-barrel ejector housing. Serial numbers ranged from 1 through 25548, with all units manufactured circa 1876–1877.
