Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in 1980, the Smith & Wesson Model 686 Distinguished Combat Magnum was built on S&W's medium-large L-frame platform to deliver long-term durability under continuous high-velocity .357 Magnum fire. While most Model 686s left Springfield with a standard satin stainless finish, early production examples were special-ordered or hand-polished in a high-gloss finish, giving them a radiant, Pythonesque aesthetic. Early "No-Dash" production revolvers from the 1980s hold premier status among S&W collectors due to their pre-lock design, forged internal components, and classic frame geometry. This specific example bears the highly desirable "No-Dash" engineering designation with serial number AHY5107, placing its production in approximately 1985. Featuring a 6-inch full underlug barrel, red ramp front sight, white-outline micro-adjustable rear sight, target hammer and trigger, and factory checkered wood target stocks with gold S&W medallions, this revolver displays stunning overall preservation. The bright stainless finish presents with mirror-like clarity and brilliance, showing minimal handling or operational wear. Mechanically, the cylinder locks up with precise tightness, the double-action and single-action trigger operation breaks crisp, and the 6-inch bore displays bright, sharp rifling. This early "No-Dash" high-gloss Smith & Wesson Model 686 represents a standout centerpiece for serious S&W wheelgun collectors. According to the owner, this revolver has a 0.004" (4-thousandths of an inch) barrel-to-cylinder gap.
