The Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 29 chambered in .44 Magnum with a 6½-inch barrel is one of the most iconic and collectible American revolvers ever produced, representing the original commercial .44 Magnum before Smith & Wesson adopted model numbers in 1957. Introduced in 1955, this large N-frame double-action revolver was developed in collaboration with renowned firearms writer Elmer Keith, whose advocacy helped bring the powerful .44 Remington Magnum cartridge to market. The 6½-inch barrel was the most popular configuration, offering an ideal balance of accuracy, velocity, and handling for target shooting, hunting, and field use. Built with forged carbon steel and finished in Smith & Wesson's beautifully polished blue, the Pre-Model 29 features a six-round cylinder, adjustable micrometer rear sight, Patridge front sight, checkered walnut target stocks, and the exceptional hand-fitted craftsmanship that defined the company's golden era of revolver production. Manufactured for only a brief period before the introduction of the Model 29 designation, these early revolvers are considerably scarcer than later examples and are highly prized by collectors for their historical significance, outstanding workmanship, and status as the original commercial .44 Magnum. Revered for its power, elegance, and enduring legacy, the Pre-Model 29 with a 6½-inch barrel remains one of the most desirable and influential revolvers ever produced.
