The CZ 52 pistol was created in the early 1950s by two brothers, Jan and Jaroslav Kratochvíl, for the Czechoslovak military. It is also known as the vz. 52, which stands for "model of 1952", and CZ 482. Ceská Zbrojovka in Strakonice produced around 200,000 vz. 52s between 1952 and 1954. Prior to adopting the 7.62×25mm vz. 52, the Czechoslovak military utilized various pistol models from both domestic and foreign sources in three different calibers. The vz. 52 served in the military for 30 years before being replaced by the vz. 82, which used the 9×18mm Makarov caliber.

The CZ 52 pistol is a semi-automatic pistol that operates through roller-locked short recoil. It uses a detachable box magazine and is fed by a single action. The pistol is chambered for the 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge, which was originally intended for the 9×19mm Parabellum caliber. However, due to political pressures, the gun had to be redesigned to use the standard Soviet pistol cartridge.
