Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Contrary to popular belief, the Model 411 preceded the Model 410. At first glance this may seem odd, a higher number preceding a lower one. However, unlike say the 39, 439, 539 and 639, the second and third digits of the Models 410 and 411 referred not to a specific series, but to their magazine capacity. The model 411 was produced between 1992 and 1996 and used an 11-round magazine. In that year, the Assault Weapons Ban was implemented, which restricted civilians to 10-round magazine capacities. As such, Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 410, which was identical to the 411 except it was sold with 10-round magazines.
The Models 410 and 411 were both part of the “Value Series”. They were intended to be well-built but affordable pistols for everyday use, chambered in the newly popular .40 Smith & Wesson round, which was introduced as a means of providing greater stopping power than the 9mm Parabellum. The 411 featured an alloy frame with blue carbon steel slide, flat blue finish, post with white dot front sight, a fixed rear sight, a right-handed slide mounted de-cocking lever, 4” barrel, the 11-round magazine, a .260” serrated hammer, .304” smooth trigger, and a Xenoy one-piece wraparound grip with straight backstrap.
