Stevens received a patent for a tip-up pistol design during the same year in which he, along with financial backers W. B. Fay and James Taylor, founded the company that bore his name. Although a producer of firearms, J. Stevens and Company's primary source of income was derived through the manufacture and sale of machine tools. The company's early years were lean ones, with production carried out in a former Chicopee Falls grist mill by fewer than 60 employees. J. Stevens and Co. underwent an expansion in 1880, and in 1886, the firm changed its name to J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co.

The original Stevens "Favorite" was patented in April 1894 and first appeared in the Stevens Catalog for that year. It became one of the most popular rifles of all time. Because of its small size and light weight it could be used by everyone, from professional trappers to youths alike. It was made almost continuously until just before World War II. There were three models (and several variants) of the Stevens Favorite -Model 1894 (1894 - 1912) Model 1889 (1889-1894) and the Model 1915 (1915 to 1935). This Model 1894 features a smooth walnut stock, 22" octagon barrel.

The model 11 is a series of rifles intended to help introduce shooting to youngsters.

A whippet is simply a sawed down Remington model 11. The term Whippet specifically refers to Bonnie Parker's 20 Gauge which was cut down so it could be concealed and then Clyde or her would “whip it out” from under their jacket for a devastating ambush.
