Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf A. Neckar C96, commonly known as the Mauser C96 “Broomhandle”, is one of the most recognizable and historically significant semi-automatic pistols ever produced. Designed by the Feederle brothers at the Mauser factory and patented by Paul Mauser, the C96 entered production in 1896 at the Mauser works in Oberndorf am Neckar, Germany, where it remained in production until the late 1930s. The pistol is instantly recognizable by its distinctive broom-handle shaped grip, integral box magazine located ahead of the trigger, and long barrel with tangent rear sight. Most examples are chambered in 7.63×25mm Mauser, a high-velocity cartridge that gave the pistol excellent range and penetration for its era, although later variants were produced in other calibers, including the famous 9mm "Red 9" military model. The standard C96 feeds from a fixed 10-round magazine loaded with stripper clips from the top of the action, an innovative feature at a time when many military sidearms were still revolvers.
Mechanically, the C96 is a short-recoil operated, locked-breech semi-automatic pistol built almost entirely from machined steel components. It was decades ahead of many contemporary handgun designs and gained a reputation for excellent accuracy, reliability, and unusually long effective range. Many models were supplied with a wooden shoulder-stock holster that could be attached to the grip, effectively turning the pistol into a compact carbine. Although it was never adopted as Germany's primary service pistol, the C96 saw widespread military use around the world, serving in conflicts ranging from the Boer War and World War I to the Chinese Civil War and even World War II. Its popularity led to numerous contract variations for countries including Turkey, Italy, Persia, China, and Germany, as well as many licensed and unlicensed copies.
