The Winchester Model 70 Short Action, commonly referred to as the Model 70 SA, is a compact variation of the legendary Model 70 bolt-action rifle designed specifically for cartridges such as the .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, and other short-action rounds. Produced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, the short-action Model 70 retained all of the classic features that earned the Model 70 its reputation as “The Rifleman’s Rifle,” while offering a lighter, quicker-cycling platform optimized for modern short cartridges. By shortening the receiver and bolt travel, Winchester created a rifle with faster operation, improved balance, and slightly reduced overall weight compared to standard long-action models, making the SA especially popular among hunters who valued compact handling and quick follow-up shots in the field.
