The FN Browning Hi-Power, formally designated the P-35 and known by its evocative French name Grande Puissance, stands as one of the most significant and influential service pistols in the history of firearms, born from a demanding French military specification in the early 1920s that called for a 9mm sidearm carrying more than ten rounds and weighing under one kilogram — requirements that pushed the boundaries of what pistol design could achieve at the time. Entrusted to the legendary John Moses Browning, who was forced to engineer around his own prior patents having already sold the M1911 rights to Colt, the design introduced a cam-actuated tilting barrel operating system and a revolutionary staggered double-stack magazine developed with Belgian engineer Dieudonné Saive that packed 13 rounds of 9×19mm Parabellum into a grip slim enough to be genuinely shootable, nearly doubling the capacity of every contemporary service pistol on the market. Browning filed his foundational patent in 1923 but passed away in 1926 before seeing the design reach production, leaving Saive to complete the development work that culminated in the Belgian Army's formal adoption of the P-35 in 1935. What followed was one of the most extraordinary service histories any firearm has ever compiled — produced in excess of 1.5 million units across Belgium, Canada, and Argentina, the Hi-Power uniquely served both Allied and Axis forces during World War II, going on to see combat across more than 50 nations through Korea, Vietnam, the Falklands, and beyond, while its double-stack magazine and tilting barrel locking system quietly became the foundational blueprint from which virtually every modern high-capacity service pistol was subsequently derived.
