Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FN Browning Hi-Power, designated the P-35 and known across the world as the Grande Puissance, is one of the most storied and celebrated service pistols in the entire history of firearms, a design whose roots stretch back to the early 1920s when the legendary American inventor John Moses Browning was commissioned to answer a French military requirement for a high-efficiency 9mm sidearm carrying more than ten rounds and weighing under one kilogram — a set of demands that pushed the boundaries of what pistol design could achieve at the time. Browning, having previously sold the rights to his iconic Colt M1911 to Colt, was forced to engineer around his own prior patents, and in doing so conceived a locked-breech short-recoil tilting-barrel system paired with a groundbreaking staggered double-stack magazine — refined by Belgian engineer Dieudonné Saive — that packed 13 rounds of 9×19mm Parabellum into a grip slim and elegant enough to be genuinely comfortable in the hand, nearly doubling the capacity of every contemporary service pistol on the market.

Browning filed his foundational patent in 1923 but tragically passed away in 1926 before seeing his creation reach fruition, leaving Saive to shepherd the design through years of further development and testing until the Belgian Army formally adopted it in 1935 as the P-35. What followed was one of the most remarkable service histories any firearm has ever compiled — produced by FN Herstal in Belgium, John Inglis and Company in Canada, and licensed manufacturers across the globe to the tune of over 1.5 million units, the Hi-Power carried the unique and extraordinary distinction of being issued to soldiers on both sides of World War II, serving Allied paratroopers, British commandos, and Canadian infantry while simultaneously being manufactured under German occupation as the Pistole 640(b) for Wehrmacht forces, a fact that speaks volumes about the universal respect the design commanded. It went on to serve with distinction through Korea, Vietnam, the Falklands War, the Rhodesian Bush War, and conflicts across more than 50 nations over nearly eight decades, and its double-stack magazine architecture and tilting-barrel locking system quietly became the foundational blueprint upon which virtually every modern high-capacity service pistol was subsequently built, a legacy of mechanical genius and battlefield-proven reliability that places the Hi-Power in an elite class occupied by only a handful of firearms designs in all of history.
